Steinberg will explain what SLAPP lawsuits are, how Michigan’s new law is designed to protect people speaking on matters of public concern, and what these issues mean for free expression and civic participation.
Speaker Bio:
Michael J. Steinberg is a Professor from Practice at the University of Michigan Law School and founding director of its Civil Rights Litigation Initiative. Before joining Michigan Law, he served for 22 years as legal director of the ACLU of Michigan, overseeing the organization’s litigation statewide. He has litigated dozens of significant civil rights and civil liberties cases involving freedom of speech and expression, voting rights, racial justice, religious freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, immigrant rights, and other constitutional issues. Six cases on which he worked were decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
